Over the weekend I attended a rally around property taxes here in Cabarrus County. Folks out in Mount Pleasant report increases from 100-150%. We tend to talk a lot about property taxes but never discuss the why of them being on the rise. The answer is simple— my ultra wealthy opponent, Paul Newton.
In efforts to bring big corporations to North Carolina, Newton and his colleagues promised them a 0% corporate tax rate. They lowered the individual income tax rate, but North Carolinians still pay collectively more in taxes than the big corporations. This means that the money that North Carolina loses from not collecting the corporate income tax, is made up by individuals across the state.
Now, you may be asking what this has to do with property taxes. People are going to their county commissioners asking why the taxes are rising, but it starts in Raleigh. By giving big corporations tax breaks to help support wealthy families, like private school vouchers, the General Assembly is putting less funding towards our counties. As a result, we receive less services and higher taxes to supplement the funding that the state is supposed to provide.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my family or other hard-working families to cover the taxes of big corporations so that the ultra-wealthy can get even wealthier.
Instead, I would like to see property taxes lowered and for counties to be able to provide much needed services to their citizens. We need legislators that prioritize your needs instead of shilling for big corporations at your expense.
This is why I’m asking for your support today. I need your help getting to Raleigh to make a difference. I want to push back against legislation that works against us and be a voice for the working men and women in our state. By contributing funds or volunteering, you can help me help make sure that voters are informed about what ultra wealthy Newton has been doing in Raleigh and making sure they get out to vote for change.
Can I count on you to support me?
Best,
