Dear Neighbors,
The events of this past week brought me back to August of 1996. My husband and I had just moved to Durham, North Carolina. As newlyweds, expectant parents, grad school for him and a new job for me, we received a welcome that I will never forget. For those of you who remember, Hurricane Fran made landfall on August 23, 1996 causing extensive damage here in North Carolina and to surrounding states. I remember the impact it had on me personally and the devastating impact it had on communities across our state.
My heart and mind is with the many in western North Carolina right now who are rebuilding through the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Power, service and water have been out for many days now leaving people scared and uncertain.
I want to take a moment to set aside campaigning and draw your attention to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund. The fund is accepting contributions for those affected by the hurricane damage.
Visit nc.gov/donate to contribute to the Fund.
I am grateful to witness people coming together to take care of our neighbors in the mountains. There isn’t a better time than now for us to stand together and be the community and state that we need. I know we are capable of a great deal of compassion and cooperation in moments like these. It’s this kind of energy that we will use to move North Carolina forward, together.
Best,
Kim Sexton-Lewter
